Ullens Center for Contemporary Art is showing the first institutional exhibition by Ji Dachun. Over 40 works from the past decade, exploring several key moments of his career, but he has been painting for over 40 years. Known for his surrealist, satirical critiques of contemporary Chinese society, Ji is often dividing between traditional Chinese forms and the post-modern art construction of the West. He feel confused and wants to make his own interpretation from the traditional side of Chinese ink painting. During this process it developed to some humorous images, such as an ostrich putting a sock on its head or as a long horse. Some works are in black and white and some in colour that tells a story. I guess he is exploring in darkness and evolve unconsciously.
