Ai Weiwei tops power list
Chinese dissident artist Ai weiwei has been named the art world’s most powerful fugure in a new ranking by the contemporary art magazine ArtReview. It publish an annual “Power 100 list” last week, in conjunction with Frieze Art Fair in London.
The editor Mark Rappolt said the choice of Ai was not a political one, even if political activism is visible in this year list. ‘It’s expanding the possibilities of what you can do with art and as an artist how you can use your voice”. Others on the top 10 list are mostly gallerists and museum directors.
The day after China crititized the Art Magazine for naming dissident artist Ai Weiwei as the art world’s most powerful figure, saying the selection based as “political bias” runs contrary to the magazines principles. He probably would not be on the top of the list, if he had not been arrested 5 months ago with the strong reaction from the rest of the world and demand for his release.
